Welcome to the DonnellyCanada website

 The primary purpose of this website is to assemble and share information relating to the heritage of the parish of Tierworker (also known as Moybolgue) in Ireland.

DonnellyCanada is an informal cooperative to be composed of members who support the objectives of the Heritage Tierworker program.

If Heritage Tierworker is something that interests you, you are cordially invited to become a member of the DonnellyCanada Cooperative by completing the Membership Log-in Form. As a member, you will be able to write your own articles and submit them for publication on this website - it is not difficult!

You can do any and all of the following:

01Provide your own stories, old photos, and your own family memoirs to be a part of the record for Heritage Tierworker

02Buy the book "THE EYES THAT SHONE: From Ireland to Canada in the 1950s". This is the first project to be completed within the Heritage Tierworker program

03Register to become a member of the DonnellyCanada Cooperative, and post your own memoirs, articles, photos and maps

04Create your own blog, and post comments on the blog posts of other members

Wherever you are in the world, and whatever your age, if you have a family connection to a parish or townland in the country centred on the towns of Bailieboro, Shercock, Kingscourt, Moynalty near the border between County Meath and County Cavan in Ireland, you can use the DonnellyCanada website to help write a chapter of Heritage Tierworker.

Philip Donnelly participated - as a reader - at the 23rd Gerald Manley Hopkins Festival in Newbridge, County Kildare on July 28, 2010, and also attended the Knockatallon Festival at the Sliabh Beagh Hotel and Tourism Centre in County Monaghan on July 29, 2010.

The Eyes That Shone - from Ireland to Canada in the 1950s

But a word of warning! The Eyes That Shone is not a saga filled with horrible tragedy and dysfunctional relationships, but rather a celebration of family lives in Ireland and Canada, in other words, a happy story featuring:

  • Memories of life on small farms in Ireland before 1950 and before tractors and electrification, when growing food depended largely on human sweat and muscle
  • Recollections about people and events in the Department of Public Works of Canada where the author worked during the period 1957 to 1991
  • Intimate perspectives on living and dying, politics and religion, home and family
